We are currently undertaking research into the occurrence of squirrelpox virus in squirrels in Southern Scotland, and its effect on local red squirrel populations. We are investigating the movement of grey squirrels carrying squirrelpox from infected populations in northern Cumbria in sourthern Scotland. |
Squirrelpox is a virus which can be carried by grey squirrels, who are unaffected by it, but they can pass it on to red squirrels to whom the virus is fatal. |
If you see a sick or dead red squirrel or a dead grey squirrel, please let your local Red Squirrel Conservation Officer know so that a blood sample can be taken to test for squirrelpox. |
